Robert Gavin

Musical Director

Robert went to Camberwell High, graduating in 1972. My memories of Robert are of an incredibly enthusiastic and talented student who was involved in conducting the Senior Choir, preparing us for choral competitions like the interschool one and also his involvement in the annual Choral Festival. Robert was a talented pianist at school and also I remember him as having a happy disposition....always a friendly smile on his face.

He has since gone on to become a successful musical director and I have Robert's permission (and also the permission of the webmaster of the Patsy's People site - as he was recently involved in the Patsy Cline musical with Deborah Conway) to reproduce these lines and his photograph....

"Robert Gavin is one of Australia's leading musical directors and conductors in music theatre. His career spans from the musical direction of Robyn Archer's A Star Is Torn, Pirates, Candide, Jeannie Lewis' Piaf - The Songs And The Story, Starlight Express, Anything Goes, Buddy - The Buddy Holly Story through to conductor for Big River, Jerry's Girls, The King And I, Chess and Into the Woods as well as musical supervisor and orchestration for Once In A Blue A Moon for ABC Television with the Melbourne Symphony.

His pre-eminence in orchestration has led to award-winning tracks for Marina Prior's Leading Lady and Aspects of Andrew Lloyd Webber, Anthony Warlow's On The Boards and Jane Rutter's Apassionada. He has been Composer-In-Residence for both Melbourne and Nimrod Theatre Companies and written over 100 scores for repertory theatre.

Most recently Robert has been Music Director for the Australian Film Industry Awards, I Only Want To Be With You - The Dusty Springfield Story, Piaf with Caroline O'Connor and Production Music Supervisor for the recent season of Buddy - The Musical touring throughout Australia, South East Asia and New Zealand."
